Pick 1x for simple shifting on mixed surfaces or 2x for tight road-style steps. Look for tubeless-ready wheels, generous tyre clearance, hydraulic disc brakes and mounts for bags, racks and fenders. Racers can prioritise CX geometry and fast-rolling 33 mm tyres, while explorers may prefer stable handling and 40–50 mm rubber.
